monster hunter world: iceborne pc review

The cosy new hub Seliana is a winter getaway full of delights, new mini games, and even saunas. Thank you for signing up to PC Gamer. You'll need a top tier PC to see MWH at its absolute best, but it still looks and runs much better than the console versions on medium settings on mid-range PCs. There’s a reason I gave the original release of Monster Hunter: World … PC Game Reviews • Monster Hunter: World • 22 Wot I Think - Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Monster Hunter World - … Wounding a monster part makes it take more damage and be less likely to deflect an attack, which is nearly vital against things like that High Rank Jyuratodus I mentioned earlier, which has had its deflecting capabilities increased by a lot. Every weapon type has received a couple new moves or combos – ones that don’t completely change how they handle or anything, but add a bit more nuance for experienced users. It seems as though a billion tiny changes have been made across the board, including tweaking the UI, how you interact with certain systems, and more. It was also annoying that some of the new weapons are simple, slightly disappointing recolors of old models. Minor equipment spoiler warning! Again, this could be an issue long-time Monster Hunter players won’t care about because their expectations for expansions are different. And even if it’s not quite as pretty a picture on the surface, it’s packed with lovely little details all the same. By Joe Skrebels. So yes, there's a lot of bang for your buck. I gave it a 10/10 on PS4, and made it my personal Game of the Year for 2019, despite it not technically being a new release. Please refresh the page and try again. Blood, Mild Language, Use of Alcohol, Violence, Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB. It enables you to hook onto a monster at any time and inflict smashing damage to any of its parts. If there's one disappointment besides the iffy storyline, it's the fact that the game still has gendered armour sets and insists on making half of the women's outfits a combo of boob armour and bikinis. It’s a wonderfully self-aware decision, leaving the classic Monster Hunter equipment grind to the more interesting fights. Monster Hunter World reached a wider audience than any other game in the franchise, mesmerizing new hunters and pleasing longtime veterans. For those who dipped their toes in World or didn't see it to the end, Iceborne has almost nothing to offer. The loot chase is fully reinvigorated. Iceborne is a mix of new monsters, regions, mechanics and a whole new endgame, all geared towards veteran players. Subspecies are great, but those Paolumu and Pukei-Pukei are still a bit too familiar (especially when the visuals of their armor sets and weapons are often just reskins). When they showed off Iceborne for the first time, I was all in. You didn’t have to be an expert to succeed, which made it more newcomer-friendly. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne isn’t for the casual hunter. Couple that with the polish on the multiplayer side and I continue to lose hours to this game. … A Subspecies like the Coral Pukei-Pukei does more than just color it red, drop it in the Coral Highlands, and replace its poison with water – it has new special moves, new behaviors, and that change in location can make a tangible difference. No, for real, there's hot pools now. Beast mode. However, the ones that do use unique models were often among the coolest in World so far, like the return of a Rathalos hammer that is literally just the entire dragon’s head on a stick. Here’s a quick comparison for context: a typical piece of World’s best High Rank armor will give you 72 defense, which can then be bumped up to 92 if you augment and upgrade it to the max. And, just so it’s clear, that’s the worst armor in Iceborne. Most notable is the Clutch Claw. One of these is on every piece of Beta armor, allowing you to easily use powerful new Decorations that can come with two different skills in one. A few performance patches made 60fps at 1080p easier to hit for most mid-range PCs and improvements to mouse and keyboard controls have since made MHW feel right at home on PC, but it's still a hog at higher settings and resolutions. Form suffers a little for function here, as the drab white and grey of Seliana make it nowhere near as lovely as the ramshackle ships and colorful foliage of Astera, but it’s so wonderfully convenient that I rarely wanted to go back. On the other hand, driving a monster into a wall felt inconsistent at first, but once we realized how reliant this attack is on the state of the monster, it became borderline insane – it can deal at least 1,000 damage and also knocks the monster down. Monster Hunter: World review MH:W sets up a reverse Jurassic Park scenario and adds high fashion to make dragon murder (and gardening) infinitely entertaining. But more than that, the room itself is customizable to a hysterical degree: floor type, wall type, furniture, curtains, paintings, hanging decorations, items on shelves, plant life, and the color, pattern, or wood grain of many of those things can be changed to your liking. It is worth noting, however, that more monsters will be added for free post-launch (similar to the base game) with the returning Rajang the first to arrive next month. The endgame is a promising new kind of format for the series that makes its hunts feel more organic, instead of the trawls through the quest board that the game utilises most of the time. Couple that with innumerable quality-of-life improvements (plus a few exciting surprises along the way) and Iceborne manages to hit the high bar set by Monster Hunter: World no matter what you call it. Capcom has made this for their dedicated fanbase, and to its credit, managed to offer up not just something that will satisfy the desire for new content, but provide a new structure for the game’s hunts that goes beyond simply offering 'more'. New York, 7.6. Have you played Monster Hunter World: Iceborne? Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is an excellent expansion so large that it almost feels like a sequel. Each piece of the Master Rank Jagras set, for example, only needs one of each of its required materials, acknowledging that you didn’t fly across the ocean to a snowy new land just to immediately go back to the Ancient Forest and hunt Great Jagras all day. Link Official site. While this is not an entirely new game in feel or structure when compared to Monster Hunter: World, it adds a new story nearly as large as the base game’s with almost as many new monsters to kill, carve, and wear like a celebratory tuxedo. Monster Hunter: World Iceborne's rocky PC launch still haunts its Steam reviews. Importantly, it all feels substantial and integrated in ways that complement what's already there, instead of just being gimmicks to artificially expand the game's scope. Thursday, Feb 13 2020 10:13AM. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is an expansion that is almost a fully-sized game on its own, and the game doesn’t feel complete anymore without it. Contributor. It didn’t really feel like it was devaluing what I had earned in the base game because I was just too dang excited about what I was getting in return. It's an objectifying gaze that I'd hoped the series would've grown out of. Honestly, there isn’t really a dud amongst them. Until then I'll still enjoy the platter they're offering, but it can't help leaving me feeling a little empty at times. 0. So why these fumbles? A true beast of an expansion, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne adds a boatload of impressive new and returning monsters and improvements to an already incredible game. PC Gamer is part of Future US Inc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. It provides a real benefit during co-op fights. With World the discomfort was extreme at times, beating monsters till they limped then being asked to lop off their tails to hear whines and squeals. Everything in it is a good challenge, but it’s also not quite the spike in difficulty veterans may have been hoping for after honing their skills in the base game – especially if you’ve been taking down tempered monsters for the last year (though I bet even Extreme Behemoth will get a fair bit easier with Master Rank gear). Whether they're collapsing ice shelves or tearing up trees for battering rams, there's a sense of connection between its creatures and their surroundings that sells a rich, tactile world. The new fights feel crafted to poke at the weak points in a player's preparation and tricks. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Review | New Weapons Coming In Clutch. My main weapon is the Insect Glaive, which has two new mid-air attacks that are fairly basic, but you can now also use slinger ammo to power up your Kinsect. While the story is (once again) pretty much just there to pull you through the bulk of the new content, Iceborne adds a welcome new emphasis on its cast. Sign up to get the best content of the week, and great gaming deals, as picked by the editors. Future US, Inc. 11 West 42nd Street, 15th Floor, As an expansion, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne requires that players have completed the main story in the base game. One of the most tangible tweaks is an entirely new mechanic that lets you ride small monsters either toward the monster you are hunting, following its tracks, or a location you set on your map. However, the same level of courtesy isn’t offered to the new weapons. Developed and published by Capcom on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, it's a full-fledged companion to the already lengthy action RPG/monster hunting extravaganza. It was relatively confusing to understand how it behaved at first, but my party and I eventually realized just how powerful it is. Review update: 1/7/20 — Iceborne PC release: 1/9/20. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Review. Iceborne isn't a full blown sequel, but it still has touches of the radical that revitalises a game that's still thriving. By Peter Glagowski Jan 12, 2020. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne PC Review PC and chill. The new additions offer just enough variety to keep the innovation train rolling, while making sure it's familiar enough to veterans. Of course part of that feast is a plethora of cutscenes that construct a clumsy storyline the game could have done without. Weapons themselves have also been tweaked in subtle but exciting ways. This isn’t helped by the fact that upgrading weapons can sometimes force you to grind old monsters in a way the armor system explicitly avoids. You’ll spend your post-credits grind time in a vastly different manner than anything you’ve seen in Monster Hunter: World so far. It's a preposterous notion (our hunters aren't even from this continent!) The only major mark against it is that the PC version of Iceborne is still lagging behind its console counterparts in terms of updates and post-launch content, much of which builds on the already top-notch host of monsters and quality-of-life adjustments Iceborne brought at release. Game description: Iceborne Expansion for Monster Hunter World is a fully-fledged paid expansion coming in September 6th 2019 on consoles and January 9th 2020 on PC… While this review keeps monster and story spoilers to a minimum, the video does show off new weapons and armor from the early-to-mid points of Iceborne's campaign… I've spent hundreds of hours in it between both the Xbox One and PC versions. In addition to the higher stats, new skill combinations to experiment with, and cool new armor aesthetics (most of which are fantastic, though some do look disappointingly identical to their High Rank counterparts), you’re also getting the new level 4 Decoration slots. Developer Capcom PC hunters, our wait is almost over! If you're already a fan and want to know as simply as possible if Iceborne justifies its price tag, then let me put it like this: I had 200 hours in World before this expansion; I've racked up almost another 200 since I started it. That meant I was going to have to wait to get my hands on the expansion. It’s a needlessly elaborate system that affects nothing at all, but that didn’t stop me from spending hours of my time and WAY too many research points buying and customizing this space to my liking. This helps any Master Rank armor set offer more than just a numerical draw. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is available now for PS4 and Xbox One, with the PC version coming in January 2020. Share Share Tweet Email. Details I'd never seen before kept revealing themselves now I was taking my time to observe. Release: January 9th, 2020 On: Windows From: Steam Price: £35/$40/€40. Developer: Capcom Publisher: Capcom. It took me longer than I would have liked to get my hands on these cool new toys, as most of the needed materials don’t arrive until much later. The first major DLC package for the hit monster hunting game, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is a new story that begins after the events of the main game. NY 10036. If Monster Hunter World ate up your time, Iceborne will eagerly take the leftovers. There was a problem. I also love that returning monsters like Tigrex (my archnemesis from Freedom 2) is nearly as tough as I remember. A new chef named the Grammeowster contrasts the Meowscular Chef’s style by cooking with love and delicacy as felynes bake bread and mix stew around her, the new forge is stunning to look at, and the crisscrossing paths and intimate layout of the town give it a much younger feel than the decades-old Astera. That realization made me very thankful it doesn’t take up one of your two tool slots. Some people can stick with the Monster Hunter format for thousands of hours, and more power to them – I was fine saying farewell after 130 hours. September 4, 2019. Well, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is to the base game what chocolate ice cream is to chocolate biscuits. Capcom has truly accomplished something special with Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, which is a massive expansion to an already amazing game.Taking place right after Monster Hunter World, ‘The Fifth’ is tasked with exploring an uncharted area known as the Hoarfrost Reach which serves as the largest region in the game to date. My favorite spot was a frozen cliff face where whole sections of the ground can come crumbling down, dropping you to an underground area far away if you don’t escape to stable footing in time. Platforms: PS4 (reviewed), Xbox One and PC MonsterVine was provided with a PS4 code for review. Sure, I was excited for more entirely new monsters, but these fan-favorites deserved to be recreated. Don’t think of this like mounting a monster; it’s a very different and specialized mechanic which lets you grab on, accomplish a task, and retreat. By tackle, I mean claim to be part of the ecosystem and that, by killing these monsters, they're somehow preserving things. Once an incredibly niche series, Capcom has turned Monster Hunter into its most successive franchise to date. They really do feel like new fights, but only to a certain extent. You’ll return to the mainland of the New World a fair amount, but there’s actually a great balance struck between exploring this beautiful new playground and facing fresh threats in familiar places. Just like last time, you follow tracks, fight monsters, and try to figure out what’s causing all this commotion so you can promptly kill it and turn it into a sweet pair of pants – you know, for research. Yet rather than actually address this or just go on ignoring this aspect of its world building, Iceborne lands on an awkward middle ground, drawing attention to the moral bankruptcy of its characters with a nonsense lie. But I can't say I don't smile mischievously when my Fifth-Fleet friends complain about Tigrex's erratic attacks in Iceborne! There's always been an unease for me in playing these games where I'm asked to go out, invade the habitats of these species and kill them to make the next set of armour and weapons. 0 Monster Hunter World has been quite a success worldwide and the latest DLC, Iceborne, launched a couple of months ago onto consoles. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne PC review summary In Short: An essential purchase for any Monster Hunter fan, that also happens to be one of Capcom’s best ever PC ports. Monster hunter World was my game of the year when it released. That's no easy feat given the game's elaborate nature, and doubly so when Iceborne piles on new mechanics. Developer Capcom. Seliana’s Gathering Hub is also a cut above, full of extravagant saunas and pools to sit in and interactable foot baths where you can pet and play with your palico. Iceborne isn’t just DLC, it’s a whole new game in its own right. Every weapon type has received a couple new moves or combos that don't change them drastically but can add a touch of freshness to a familiar moveset. You can access Master Rank in Iceborne simply by completing the main quest in Monster Hunter: World, making it more accessible than once thought. Master Rank monsters are stronger and more resilient too, but these tweaks made them feel different to fight from the base game’s buffed up Tempered versions. Perhaps Capcom will one day find a way to engage more carefully with its themes. This is clearly a location that was designed with usability in mind, and its spiderweb of paths makes moving around easy while keeping all of your needed stations (the Resource Center, the Canteen, the Blacksmith, etc.) Dominic L 10/01/20 Comments Closed. There's so much substantial new stuff here, so much to see and do, it feels like one of those ludicrous platters the hunters are served before a quest. Placing pets in your Astera rooms is fun, but this is on another level entirely. © Monster Hunter: World for PC Review. Updated: 21 Apr 2020 1:09 am. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne adds loads of impressive monsters and tons of quality-of-life improvements to an already incredible game. Learning to avoid the Nightshade Paolumu’s clouds of sleep-inducing smoke or its new wildly erratic mid-air attack is exciting, but it’s still not as exciting as fighting any of Iceborne’s entirely new monsters - or even the returning ones that are simply new to World. Monster Hunter: see deal. It's a small thing but a glimpse of what a kinder game could be like, making it all the more apparent what a cruel game Monster Hunter is. This tool lets you grapple onto a monster and either wound a part, change its direction, or try to drive it into a wall, depending on what you do. No matter my complaints there's no denying how compelling Monster Hunter remains and how much Iceborne excels at improving the fundamental experience. An extra graphical option for snow will tax your GPU RAM a touch more if you crank it up, but that's about it. The only thing, I had already switched over to the PC version of the game. While the constant need for Hot Drinks and the slow pace of moving through heavily snowy areas can be tedious at times, the Hoarfrost Reach is a fantastic addition to World. Sahil Lala. And that difficulty is a tricky thing. They’re all similar enough to be familiar, but each has slightly new tricks up their sleeves - like better, less predictable AI - that make their fights nearly as engaging as any other new monster. But my favorite changes were ones that more noticeably influenced how a monster behaved, like Tzitzi-Ya-Ku now hopping to change direction in the middle of its signature flash-stun attack – it’s awesome in the completely infuriating sort of way, but I love that it manages to make that fight a little harder without just bumping up numbers. New Monsters in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. How Returning Monsters Stack up in Iceborne, The Messy Messaging Behind Cyberpunk 2077's Messy Launch, Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Promised Refunds It Couldn't Actually Guarantee, Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Review, Cyberpunk 2077 and More PS4 Games Are on Sale Right Now, Viral Video of 6 Year-Old Being Banned from COD: Warzone Was Faked for a Competition, GTA's Cayo Perico Heist: Seven Years of Evolution, the returning Rajang the first to arrive next month, separate review for Monster Hunter: World's initial PC Launch, Things Ghost of Tsushima Doesn't Tell You. What is it? Monster Hunter World: Iceborne's PC launch is mostly good, though some curious issues hold it back from true excellence. An expansion to the combat heavy monster fighter. In just a few more days, we won’t have to look at our console comrades with jealousy as Iceborne … Yeah, it’s trash now.” I’m exaggerating here... but not by much. Still, it’s a wonderful surprise and more than worth getting to and spending time with after you’ve “beaten” Iceborne. Unlike Seliana itself, it flaunts style and substance together because it also has access to absolutely everything you might want to check between missions, making its usefulness over the Astera Gathering Hub incomparable. Details . But interestingly, Iceborne doesn’t wait very long at all to start introducing Tempered versions of Master Rank monsters, so you’ll be able to amp things up even further once your gear makes the jump. Expect to pay £35/$40 These fights are fun ways to turn an encounter I knew like the back of my hand entirely on its head, and I absolutely love that about them. If these games are going to continue to ask me to think about their world then they need to spend more time entertaining the notion that its hunters are the bad guys. Engaging as its loop is, as enthralling as its fights are, I've always been disappointed that they've created such a rich ecosystem and the only thing they can ask me to do in it is murder everything. Some are cooler than others – like the antlered Banbaro which can pick up a rock with its horns that will change elemental type depending on the location in which you fight it, or the incredible new elder dragon Namielle that has surprises I won’t spoil – but I loved every single fight I had in this expansion regardless. A PS4 code for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne was provided by Capcom for this review. Specifically, Nargacuga - and its theme song, now expertly remade - is one of my personal all-time favorites, and I'm just as happy to fight and farm this guy as I am to fight the all-new Namielle. A bigger change, no matter what weapon you’re using, is the addition of the Clutch Claw. Rarity 9 acts as sort of a new baseline for weapons in Iceborne, and while many of them can be crafted outright to skip the early tiers, a few bafflingly can’t, for seemingly no reason. The craft that goes into all the details of these spaces is absurd and so vital to offsetting the unpleasant moments where you brutally murder a monster fighting for its life. When it comes to the monster hunting itself, Iceborne is Monster Hunter at its peak. This expansion picks up after the end of the base game’s main campaign, but I was curious how it would tempt me away from my High Rank armor and weapons, which were full of augments and synergistic skills I’d grown so used to. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne review by Mick Fraser on . It’s not an overstatement when I say Iceborne feels like a reset, a new starting point that ratchets everything up and leaves you with little reason to head back to High Rank (unless you are missing some stupid Vaal Hazak fangs, of course). Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is a perfect expansion and worth every penny. I love Monster Hunter: World. Worse, the other half of the women's armour is great, stylish stuff. The type of ammo influences the effect, so I found myself thinking just a little bit differently while fighting as a result, adding a touch of freshness to a familiar weapon. The imagination on display is maintained right through to the final fight, finding ways to surprise and challenge even the most experienced of hunters. My fight against Nargacuga was the first time I got carted (knocked out) during Iceborne, and those surprising and scary step-ups in power as you continually encounter the “bigger fish” in each ecosystem are alive and well in this expansion. Console players have been able to enjoy a range of new content as well as Master Rank quests already while PC players have been left salivating waiting for … Let me just say, it was well worth the wait. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Developer: Capcom Price: $40 if you own Monster Hunter World, $60 for the base game and Iceborne bundle. I dropped over 100 hours into it on PS4 then another 60 hours on the PC version. Tigrex, Nargacuga, Brachydios, and Glavenus (each of which are flagship monsters of previous installments), plus more have found a new home with Iceborne, and I’m ecstatic to have them all in one place. To help with this endeavor, players can now create a set of defender gear, designed to handle all monsters from that game, at little cost. If you like Monster Hunter World, this is more of the same at its core. It pushes Monster Hunter into a much more readily shared experience, making the game feel like a nightly event. Thankfully this didn’t happen too often, but the inconsistency of some Rarity 9 weapons being craftable on their own and others requiring the previous weapon to upgrade from was aggravating all the same. It keeps that winter wonderland from ever getting dull, though it was never at much risk of that to begin with. It’s that Iceborne relies too heavily on Subspecies and Variants of existing monsters. If it's not the cold eating at your stamina, it's monsters dripping explosive goo everywhere or wiping you off the map by summoning waves of water. An aptly-named expansion, Iceborne, takes players to a new glacial hunting grounds and promises to improve upon the exciting action that made Monster Hunter: World an international hit. There is a lot more however, with new region Hoarfrost Reach adding a whole biome to expand the delight at the heart of Monster Hunter: getting to traipse around in its ecosystems and see how its monsters interact with them. It’s hard to speak vaguely about it, but what I will say is that it’s an extremely cool direction to go in – though one which potentially relies more heavily on some of the less exciting parts of grinding for materials than I’d like. None of it will flip the way you play Monster Hunter on its head, but they’re meaningful enhancements that show Iceborne is intent on doing more than just adding monsters. That’s not to undersell these fights. With Monster Hunter World, it seems like Capcom took the PC port seriously. The line between an expansion and a full-blown sequel is one Monster Hunter World: Iceborne comes close to blurring into oblivion. If you want to play Monster Hunter World: Iceborne at its prettiest, be warned that you need a beefy PC. Or so I thought. Meanwhile, the new personal room in Seliana is about style and nothing else. Enter Iceborne’s all-new Master Rank missions with an entirely new tier of equipment where Bone and Alloy Armor – the bottom-of-the-barrel basic stuff – has a whopping 114 base defense. Every weapon tree has been extended, with the previous peak of Rarity 8 now potentially stretching all the way up to the ever-sparkling icons of Rarity 12. Without spoilers, these characters have actual story arcs this time – they’re still pretty shallow, but it made the story more engaging and far less forgettable than the first. Seliana, the new town established just outside of the Hoarfrost Reach, is exciting for a different reason: it’s flat. I'll make this short and sweet. Without giving more away, it simply feels like the culmination of everything World was trying to bring to the series. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne PC Review.
